At this time, the only supported multipath policy is Most Recently Used (default).
VMware storage administration best practices
Rescan SAN operations
HP recommends that whenever a change is made to the front-side zone a “Rescan SAN” operation
is performed on all ESX servers. This is particularly important after recovery of a path failure or when
an DPM is replaced. If “Rescan SAN” is not performed, the ESX server may not know about new
available paths and will operate in a single path mode.
The VMware VI GUI or vmkmultipath command should be used to verify that all expected paths
have been discovered and are marked as available.
Storage VMotion
Storage VMotion is a new feature for VMware ESX V3.5 (only) and is fully supported with the current
DPM/VSM versions (see the Deployment Overview section for specific version number). See
“Deployment overview” on page 157 for supported version.
• Use the VMware VMotion CLI utility to move virtual machines between DATASTORES. For inform-
ation, go to: http://www.vmware.com/go/remotecli.
• Make sure that both VSM virtual disks that include the source and destination DATASTORE have
permissions and are assigned to the ESX servers.
Using VSS with Windows 2003 SP2 running on a virtual machine
Using the Microsoft Virtual Shadow Copy Service (VSS) with Windows 2003 SP2 running on VMware
Virtual Machines is supported with ESX 3.5 update 2 or higher and ESXi 3.5 update 2 or higher.
Generally this service is needed when there is a need for a synchronized snapshot (also known as
consistent quiescent). With VMware virtual machines, the VSS is used to either take synchronized
snapshots of virtual disks that serve applications running on the virtual machine (like Exchange,
MS-SQL, and others) or synchronized snapshots of the virtual machine itself.
Creating synchronized snapshots of application volumes
• Virtual machines with the Windows OS and their associated virtual disks serving the application
must be created on raw devices and not on DATASTORE/vmfs file system devices.
