A local area network (or

LAN) provides

connections that tie the

computers together and

allow them to

communicate. (The most

common type of local

area network may also be

referred to as an Ethernet

LAN or an Ethernet.)

Local area networks can

be either wired (as shown

here) or wireless. We will

look at the different types

in the next few pages.
