123Storage Management Appliance Software V2.0 User Guide
severity code
String of characters used to describe an event. The severity code indicates the relative impact the
event could have on network operations and the priority a network manager should place on
investigating the event. The following are common severity codes.
Fatal Critical Major
Minor Warning Information
Other Unknown
Each event is assigned a severity code and Management Appliance users can filter event
notifications to include only specified severity codes. See “Configuring User Properties for
Notification,” on page 68 for more information.
SMTP Server (for Management Appliance)
The outgoing mail server used by the Storage Management Appliance to send e-mail notification
to a standard e-mail address or an e-mail pager address. See “Setting Up the SMTP Server,” on
page 35 for more information.
SNMP Trap
Message or unsolicited response from an SNMP agent indicating the occurrence of a particular
event. The MIB module for each agent defines the trap messages the device can generate. The
Storage Management Appliance learns of an event when it receives a trap message from an SNMP
agent. The Management Appliance can decode SNMP traps from supported devices and generate
detailed notification messages or simply forward SNMP traps to another host. The Management
Appliance can generate SNMP traps that can be decoded by other devices using the Management
Appliance MIB module. See “Setting Up Notifications,” on page 71 for more information.
SNMP trap forwarding
A type of Storage Management Appliance notification that relays the SNMP trap message
received from a SAN component to any number of hosts. Each host is called a trap recipient and
must be identified by host name and IP address. See “Defining Network Settings,” on page 36 for
more information.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
A high-speed network that interconnects different kinds of storage elements with data servers on
behalf of a larger network of users, typically using Fibre Channel technology.
storage element
A storage system connected to a Storage Area Network (SAN) that is administered as a single unit.
A storage element usually has a single controller or controller pair operating to assure continuity of
service. A network administrator can use an element manager application to manage several
storage elements of the same type.
